Experimentation and Skills Acquisition

Personal inquiry is realized through making, and making well requires both skills and experimentation. Skills give you the technical means to realize your ideas; experimentation lets you discover what is possible and find your own direction. This lesson examines how students build technical competence and use experimentation productively.

Why skills matter

Ideas alone do not make art; they must be realized in material, and that requires skill. Technical competence — the ability to draw, mix color, handle a medium, join materials, or use a tool or software confidently — determines how fully you can realize your intentions.
