Religion is one of the oldest and most widespread sources of meaning and knowledge claims in human history. The theme knowledge and religion examines what kind of knowledge religion offers, how believers justify it, and how it relates to other areas of knowledge.

The scope of religious knowledge

Religious traditions make claims across a wide scope: about the nature of reality and its origin, about morality and how to live, about meaning, purpose, and what happens after death. Some of these overlap with questions the sciences also address, while others, questions of ultimate meaning and value, lie beyond the reach of empirical method. A central TOK question is whether religious knowledge and scientific knowledge occupy the same territory and therefore compete, or address different questions
