Knowledge and Language

Language is the medium in which most knowledge is stored, shared, and even formed. The theme knowledge and language examines how the words and structures we use shape what we can know and communicate, and how meaning is created and sometimes distorted.

Language as the vehicle of shared knowledge

Almost all shared knowledge depends on language: without it, the accumulated understanding of a community could not be recorded, taught, or debated. Language lets knowledge outlive individuals and travel across distance and time. But because it is a human construction, language is not a perfectly transparent window on reality; its scope and structure shape what can be easily expressed. Concepts that a language names readily are easier to think and discuss, while those it lacks words for can be hard
