What TOK Is and What a Knowledge Question Is

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is the course at the center of the IB Diploma that asks not what we know but how we know it. Every other subject produces knowledge: biology explains cells, history reconstructs the past, the arts create meaning. TOK steps back and examines the process itself, asking how that knowledge is built, justified, shared, and sometimes overturned. This stepping-back is called second-order thinking. A first-order question asks about the world directly ("What caused the French Revolution?"); a second-order question asks about the knowledge itself ("How do historians decide which causes matter, and can they ever be certain?").
