Imagination and creativity as tools

The arts foreground imagination and creativity as primary tools of knowledge-making in a way no other AOK does. Where the sciences prize control and repeatability, the arts prize originality, expressive power, and the capacity to imagine what is not literally present. This does not mean art is undisciplined; artists master demanding techniques and conventions, brushwork, harmony, meter, editing, choreography, and work within and against traditions. The interplay of freedom and discipline, breaking rules meaningfully requires first knowing them, is a distinctive feature of arti
