Las artes (The Arts: Literature, Painting, and Architecture)

The arts let you show off descriptive, cultured Spanish. In painting, el cuadro is a painting or picture, el lienzo is the canvas, and el/la pintor(a) is the painter; a general work of art is la obra. In literature, el/la escritor(a) writes la novela (the novel), el cuento (the short story), or la poesía (poetry). In architecture, el/la arquitecto/a designs el edificio (the building) and, in a big city, el rascacielos (the skyscraper); la escultura is sculpture. You might see all of these at una exposición (an exhibition). For example: "El museo tiene una exposición de cuadros modernos" (The museum has an exhibition of modern paintings).
