The Course Framework: Roles, Contexts and Areas of Inquiry

The Diploma music course is organized not around a fixed list of works to memorize but around a way of engaging with music. Students take on three interconnected roles—researcher, creator, and performer—and explore music through four areas of inquiry across three widening contexts. Understanding this architecture is essential, because every assessment task asks you to move within it deliberately.

Three roles

As a researcher, you investigate how and why music is made, gathering evidence and building understanding of musical materials and their meanings. As a creator, you compose, arrange, improvise, or produce, turning ideas into new musical artifacts. As a performer, you interpret and realize music for listeners, whether on a traditional instrument, with your voice, or through technology.
