Distinct traditions and shared inheritance
Film cultures around the world have developed recognizable tendencies, whether in pacing, performance, narrative structure, use of music, or relationship to social reality. At the same time, all draw on a shared history of cinematic invention, so distinct traditions and common inheritance coexist. Recognizing both prevents two errors: assuming all cinema is the same, and assuming national traditions are wholly separate and unchanging.
