Assessment Guide: Textual Analysis

This guide is based on the IB Film guide with first assessment in 2024. Grade boundaries are set by the IB for each examination session, so any mark ranges given here are approximate and unofficial, intended only to show how bands work.

What the task is

The Textual Analysis is an externally assessed component in which you produce a written analysis of a short prescribed film sequence. You examine how the sequence creates meaning and effect through film language, demonstrating your ability to read a text closely and support your interpretation with evidence. The extract you analyze comes from a film chosen from an approved list, and you work with a short sequence rather than a whole film.
