Genre theory

A genre is a category of film defined by recurring conventions of subject, setting, iconography, and structure, such as the western, the musical, the horror film, or science fiction. Genres function as a contract between filmmakers and audiences, setting expectations that a film can satisfy or defy. Genre conventions include recognizable settings and props (iconography), typical narrative patterns, and characteristic tones. Genres evolve over time, and hybrids combine convention
