Sound — The Unseen Half of Cinema

Sound is often called the invisible element of film because audiences feel its effects without consciously noticing it. Yet sound carries an enormous share of a film's emotional and narrative work, shaping atmosphere, guiding attention, and telling us how to feel about what we see. A scene can be transformed by its soundtrack, and learning to listen is as important as learning to look.

Diegetic and non-diegetic sound

A fundamental distinction separates sound that exists within the story world from sound that does not. Diegetic sound comes from sources the characters can hear: dialogue, footsteps, a radio playing in a room, a car engine. Non-diegetic sound is added for the audience alone, such as an orchestral score or a voice-over narrator commenting from outside the action. Filmmakers som
