Mise-en-scène — Everything Within the Frame

Mise-en-scène, a French term meaning "placing on stage," describes everything arranged within the frame to be photographed: setting, lighting, costume, makeup, props, actor placement, and performance. If cinematography is how the camera sees, mise-en-scène is what the camera sees. Because these elements are composed deliberately, they form a visual language that communicates mood, character, period, and theme before a single word is spoken.

Setting and location

Setting establishes where and when a story takes place and colors how we interpret events. A cramped apartment can suggest confinement or poverty; a vast, sterile corporate lobby can imply alienation. Filmmakers choose between real locations, which lend authenticity, and constructed sets, which allow total control over every detail.
