Extended Essay: Assessment Guide

The Extended Essay (EE) is an independent research essay of up to 4000 words, completed by every Diploma Programme student and externally assessed by an IB examiner. It is graded on a band from A (excellent) to E (elementary) and combined with Theory of Knowledge to award up to three additional points toward the Diploma. An E grade can act as a failing condition that, with other weak core results, prevents the award of the Diploma.
