Safe Practice, Conditioning, and Injury Prevention

Because the dancer's body is the medium of the art, protecting it is both a practical necessity and a professional discipline. Safe practice is not an optional add-on; it is embedded in how you warm up, train, recover, and manage your workload. This lesson covers the principles that keep dancers healthy and dancing for years.

Warm-up and cool-down

A warm-up prepares the body for the demands of dancing by gradually raising the heart rate, increasing blood flow to muscles, mobilizing the joints, and sharpening focus. An effective warm-up moves from gentle whole-body activity to more specific, dynamic movements resembling those in the class or piece, and it prepares the mind as well as the body. A cool-down at the end gradually lowers intensity and includes gentle stretching to aid recovery.
